This week we’ve been thinking about self-care. Helping professional women navigate career and family, and be the best they can be at work and at home, is at the heart of what we do at Work Happy Mums. How can we be our best selves when we are relentlessly pushing on through and running on an empty tank, when we are simply not taking good care of ourselves? As mothers we’re often so caught up in looking after everybody else, we put our own needs last – or forget about ourselves all together.
And the struggle of the juggle is real. Very real. OECD findings from 2016 shows that women do an average of 4.5 hours of unpaid work, including domestic duties and child-care, every day. Add long working hours to that, plus 101 other ’to-do's' thrown in between, and it’s no wonder we’re left feeling exhausted, overwhelmed, and resentful towards the world. So, during this month of being #BeBoldForChange, I encourage you to take a moment and think about how and where you can put yourself first and take care of the business of you. Speak out if you need help to make it work. It's not a sign of weakness, it's a sign of strength. When the people around you know what you need, they’ll be eager to lend a hand. All you need to start is 5 or 10 minutes a day. Go for a walk. Call a friend. Play Scrabble. Read a book. Meditate. Have a bath. Whatever you choose to do, simply take the time. Time just for yourself. Time to be your best self.
